Summer 2013 Internship Opportunity
Children’s Garden at Historic Bartow-Pell
Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum in Pelham BayPark is searching for a part-time summer intern to help with our Children’s Garden that serves school groups, camp groups, scouts, and individual children.
Created in April 2012, the Children’s Garden focuses on environmental education and growing food. Children help plant and care for heirloom vegetables using sustainable growing methods within the historic farm setting. This small (44′ x 58′) garden provides opportunities for hands-on gardening in the context of the local history of the area. The garden is divided into sections highlighting different eras of gardening, beginning with a Native American Three Sisters Garden, and featuring flower, herb, and fruit borders and plots for individual children. Children enjoy hands-on projects such as seed starting, soil health, Native American growing practices, insect study, and more led by the Children’s Garden Manager and BPMM volunteers.
The role of the intern is to help maintain the garden by watering, weeding, composting, planting, and harvesting. This is an unpaid internship.
Qualifications:
• Must be able and willing to work outdoors
• Must have a demonstrated knowledge of organic gardening techniques
• Must be able to lift 40 lbs
• Must be an independent self-starter
