The Cornell Small Farms Program is pleased to announce summer job openings for full-time student positions. These positions are open to undergraduate, continuing students and based on the Cornell University, Ithaca campus.
About the Small Farms Program: We envision a future where diverse and vibrant urban and rural farms build human capacity, revitalize communities, supply regional food systems, and foster ecological resilience in a changing world. We do this by encouraging small farms-focused research and extension programs and fostering collaboration in support of small farms. Hours and Pay Rate: Positions run from mid-May to mid-August 2017, but exact dates are flexible. Work is 39 hrs/week at $10-12/hr depending on experience.
Small Farms Communication Intern
Description: This position will support all phases of Program communication and outreach to farmers and contribute to the development of educational materials. Major projects include:
- Compile and publish the Small Farms bimonthly newsletter (10,350 subscribers)
- Provide production assistance for the seasonal Small Farm Quarterly Magazine. This magazine reaches 32,217 readers across the Northeast.
- Manage Small Farms Program and Beginning Farmers Project Blogs, Facebook & Twitter accounts. Respond to public inquires via phone, email and Small Farms blog.
- Manage content at smallfarms.cornell.eduand www.nebeginningfarmers.org
- Assist with new Small Farm Guides or Publications.
- Develop farm profiles, conduct farmer interviews, and help plan beginning farmer events.
- Assist with agroforestry projects including hands-on field work maintaining the MacDaniels Nut Grove demonstration site
Qualifications: The applicant must have strong writing, editing, and organizational skills. Must have some familiarity with farming or agriculture and an enthusiasm for learning more about small farms in NY. Must be comfortable learning to use computer programs such as WordPress, Constant Contact, Excel, Google Forms and Google Analytics. Ability to work with others and independently. Experience working outdoors and with basic tools desired.

Research Assistant in Organic Vegetable Farming
Description: This position offers hands-on research experience in organic agriculture. It is an opportunity to learn about practices that improve soil health by doing field work and assisting in applied research projects. Students will help manage vegetable crops from planting to harvest, learn plant and soil sampling methods, organize data, and summarize results. Daily transportation from campus to the Homer C Thompson Vegetable Research Farm in Freeville will be provided.
Qualifications:
- Enthusiasm for and desire to learn about agricultural research and farming
- Ability to conduct physical work in a field setting
- Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to work well in a team
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Previous farm or field experience preferred
- Work-study students preferred but not required
